RE: GVWR Explanation Please

Thge frame, brakes, suspension all combined are rated at the 16,500 GVWR. The front axle and drive axle were not enough to get to 16,500 so the tag was added to give a little extra support. My W-22 has axles that total 23,000# with a total GVWR of 22,000#. You should also check the tow rating of your MH to see what you can tow. It will probably be around 3500#. Watch how you load your MH. One good way to save weight is to limit the amount of water you take. Water weighs 8# per gallon so 50 gal. not taken gives you another 400# of carrying capacity. Enjoy your MH.

RE: buying a used RV in the US (UK travellers)

Since you are coming in November you may be wise to consider a Class A. The tanks for fresh water, black water, & grey water are usually enclosed. In most Class C's the fresh tank may be inside but the waste tanks are usually hung below in the cold where they can freeze. If you are spending all of your time in the far South where freezing is not a problem you are OK but if you want to see some of the other parts you may end up with a frost problem. Almost any place has a great abundance of motorhomes for sale. All large cities have a great advantage. They will have airports and RV dealers. Enjoy your visit.

RE: How do I recaulk a shower skylight?

Another vote for Eternabond. Just make sure it is in the proper place before putting it down. It is there to stay.

RE: Tag Axle and tire pressure math

I can remember getting in trouble on the OH Tpk. with a tour bus. It was a 45' Van Hool and when we went over the scale we got pulled over because we were overweight. The employee had all the passengers get out and then we went over the scale again. When we were then safe he said to go on. I asked about the passengers and they were told to get back on. I guess it satisfied someone to do that. I thought maybe they should just hold their bags on their laps for the rest of the way home. I have a constant problem trying to drive with a full fuel tank. For some strange reason it always goes down, fast.

RE: I Got a Leak...HELP!!

I just got a flyer from General RV saying one of their fall specials is a $99 leak test of the RV. My thought on the OPs leak may be the AC unit being loose on the roof. Take the housing off inside the MH and you will probably find 4 screws, one at each corner, that hold the unit in place. They should be snug but not tightened to max. I did it every year on my old Pace Arrow and didn't have any leaks.

RE: What gassers support a motorcycle carrier

A tag axle is a second axle at the rear. The drive axle will have the dual wheels and the tag is not a driven axle but is only there for additional weight support. The extra axle will also give a little extra stability in cross winds or when trucks pass. You will also have the opportunity to purchase 2 additional tires when they are due. It sounds like you definitely need a heavy duty DP.

RE: Prevost A/C questions

You can run any one AC on the 30 amps and with an energy monitoring system you can squeeze 2 AC out of 30 amps. If you have 2 running you will have nothing left for anything else. That is what a generator is to be used for. 30 amp is nothing for an RV that size.

RE: How to handle non-RV family that want to borrow your MH?

I loaned my TT to my parents in 1970 and my mother rolled it over on the return trip. The insurance paid off the loan with no problem. My daughter & SIL borrowed my previous 35' Pace Arrow. When they got a mile from home on the return they hit a sign that blew infront of them taking out the step, windshield, and R. mirror. They paid the deductible and it was fixed like new. They don't ask to borrow any more since they have their own TT. My son & other daughter are afraid of it so no problem there.

RE: Fast Food....I remember some of these.......

When we got the milk in the glass bottles it was put into the milk chute next to the side door of the house. That way we didn't have to go out in the real cold to get the milk inside. My dad worked at Packard Motor Car Co. so we had Packards and then a Studebaker. I still have his Hamilton wrist watch that says "Ask The Man Who Owns One". We lived on a corner house in Detroit and the milkman would turn there so we had horse manure on the front and sides of the house. My mother always shoveled that up for the peonies. We had great peonies. Travelnutz says we don't get much snow. I only live 20 miles South of him and we had 147 3/4" last winter. We had measurable snow every day from after Christmas until the end of March. With new snow every night it never gets dirty.

RE: What to expect when buying a RV

My last 2 MHs have come from General RV in Michigan and they came with full LP tanks, full gas tank, new RV kit of water & sewer hose+ electrical adapter. On many Class A's you will find a spare tire is not included. I have 22.5" tires and I could not lift it or change it if necessary. The lug nuts are torqued to 450-500# and my wife is not that strong. I do carry a tire in a compartment but it would have to be mounted on a wheel by someone else. I also have full loss of one large compartment for a tire. I always thought house batteries were included from the factory. I would suggest checking at a different dealer. This is a buyer's market right now and you should get great treatment as a potential buyer.

RE: Best route to Helen, Ga from Huntsville, Al

I suggest leaving the trailer in a CG before getting to Helen. The town is built in the mountains and parking is a real problem. If you are going to Atlanta area I can recommend a few CGs. Lake Lanier Islands is a rather expensive place and you may have to buy a pass to get to the CG the first day but it is in the woods overlooking Lake Lanier. They have full hookups on many sites. If you don't need full hookups there are many COE sites around Lake Lanier with electricity. If you have full hookups and use them you can go to Twin Lakes in Cumming, GA. They don't have bath houses so you have to use your own facilities but they are very reasonable and friendly. We have been to all of them since we have Granddaughters near there.

RE: Badlands Trip

I would add the Corn Palace in Mitchell. There is some very interesting art work done with corn cobs there and it is different every year. We also liked Bear Country. We have taken our kids there and now Grandchildren. Bedrock City is also another good place if you have any children along. The Needles highway has tunnels and every tunnel is aligned with the statues on Mt. Rushmore so you can get a great picture. It will be either your front or back window as you are driving. Be sure to have some old bread for the burros in Custer State Park. While the signs say do not feed the animals I don't think they worry about them. A ranger was talking to a group of people and everyone was feeding the burros at the same time.

RE: Thinking of buying my FIRST motor home HELP!!

That is only around 82,000 miles but I would question pulling a Ford Escape. If you check the towing capability you may find it is limited to 3500#. Many of these have a frame extension that limits the towing ability to put a heavier hitch on the rear. The mileage stated is probably correct for an Imperial gallon. Dropping it by 20% for a US gallon it would be 8 1/2. Going West you will usually have a head wind but that will be compensated for on the return. If you travel fast you will also lose mileage. Driving a brick down the road is not the most aerodynamic vehicle.

RE: Fixing water damage on the old Dodge (pics)

I just started reading today and couldn't stop until I got to the end. For your roof vents if you frame them and cut them to fit the taper on the roof the AC and any other vent or fan would fit and seal much easier.

RE: ? on driving down the road in a class C

chasfm1, In my school bus there is no moving while the bus is moving. The penalty is getting written up and becoming a pedestrian for 5 days. If they want to change seats they have to wait until we are in a school yard and the bus is stopped. This also does not cause any problem on the bus. They know the rules & obey them. I do let my wife get me a drink if we are on smooth roads and there is no traffic when we are in the MH when there is no rest area close by.

RE: Saving Sales Tax

I haven't heard Idaho mentioned but Montana gets a lot of publicity for this. Some states are going after the people successfully and getting all of the back money plus penalties from their residents who have done this.

RE: Keep our 1994 pace arrow or buy new Super Nova??

Making up the beds is a problem in a Class A unless you get one of the newer bunk models. A large class C will actually have more sleeping space but will not have the enclosed tanks, extra storage, and greater CCC. I think the '94 Pace Arrow is a Widebody. My '96 was. When changing brake fluid I would ask if your husband knows to flush all old fluid out of the lines as well as the master cylinder. You bleed the lines at all 4 wheels until the new fluid comes out clear. If you have 4 wheel disks they are self adjusting but, if you have rear drums you could need a brake adjustment. Every month when I have to make a payment I wish I had my '96 Pace back. When I am in the Mountain Aire I don't mind the payments. My biggest problem is that we only get to use the MH during the summer. It used to be worse. I was Church organist & choir director for many years so that even eliminated weekend use. When going through the mountains with a gas engine you have to gear down before the hills. My experience has been that the steepest hills are in the Southern states like TN, GA, WV, VA. The high mountains out West are much easier to climb on the interstates because they are less steep, longer climbs.

RE: Driving lights

DRL come on as soon as I start the motor. The marker lights do not come on unless I hit the headlights. I also have a DOT switch that will flash the marker lights on if they are off, or off if they are on. This is supposedly an aid when trucks pass. I think they are almost invisible in daylight and I haven't been out in the dark yet with the headlights needed since I got the MH. I don't recall having to drive any of my MHs in the dark more than 1 time. For us dark is sleep time.

RE: Low ball trade-in from dealers.

One thing we don't know is how much a dealer pays for a new MH from the factory before adding in flooring costs & other expenses. He may be able to get a brand new one for a bargain from the factory right now so that is why the tradein value is so low. A dealer won't pay near new cost for a used RV.

RE: silly question, but here goes...

I like Grey Mountain. I was at the Billings KOA a few years back and I thought they were trying to get a down payment on purchasing the CG. I went down the street and got a nice place for a lot less. The WalMart there had as many RVs as the KOA. They do tell you it is the first KOA.
